Yesterday we were looking at Bodmas. Bodmas is a way of remembering which order to do calculations in. Can you remember what each letter stands for? A lot of people forget what the O stands for. (check yesterday's lesson write up if you can't remember)
What's 28 ÷ 4 + 3?
What about If I swapped it around 3 + 28 ÷ 4?
You should get the same answer for both because whatever order it's written you'd do 28 ÷ 4 first (which is 7) and then +3 to it which makes 10!
BUT...
What if I added brackets to it!
28 ÷ ( 4 + 3)
This time you wouldn't do the division first, because there's brackets in this question. So do the bracket bit first. Then Divide 28 by it. What do you get?
I get 4 this time.
Can you match these questions to an answer below (note I've put an extra number in to avoid making the last one obvious, can't be making it too easy now can I?

5 x (2 + 3)
20 - 3 x 4
15 ÷ (7 - 4)
5 x (18 - 8)
6 + 16 ÷ 4
Answer selections: 5, 50, 25, 7, 10 or 8
Now to make them a little harder - this question. 7 + 3 x 8 - 6 = 13.
The answer is supposed to be 13. But it doesn't work. I'd do the multiplication first so 3 x 8 which is 24. Then as addition and subtraction are the same I'd start at the beginning so 7 + 24 is 31 and then - 6 = 25 not 13 
.
There's a pair of brackets missing. Can you try both places to see where they go?

It's 7 + 3 x (8 - 6) = 13.

Group 1. Choose either column A or B on page 12. If you found the question above doable then I'd say column B will be no problem. If you are doing B then all you need to do is decide if brackets are needed to make the answer. If they're not then tick it. If brackets are then just add them in.

'Only one two-digit number can be written out and reversed (e.g 27 / 72) and fit with this calculation
(?? + 1) ÷ 2 = ??
EG (13 + 1) ÷ 2 = 31 - obviously that's not the answer but you get the idea with what I mean by a 2 digit number with the digits reversed. Can you work it out? - Don't worry if not; it's a challenge!

How did you get on with your tongue twisters? Could you read any of them at speed! I bet nobody has mastered Sea-Shells! My wife tried it too and was worse than me!

What do you notice about all the tongue twisters? Do they all start a certain way?
The tongue twister focuses on one letter sound and uses a lot of words which use that letter sound. That's what makes it difficult. I would like us to write some short tongue twisters today. If you send them in to me, I will try to read them and if I can find a way, record me doing so too!
Let's have a go together. Can you think of 5 or 6 words which make the 't' sound. That's t as in tummy. Go.
Now let's try to make a few sentences which use lots of those words close together.
I got Tommy, tummy, tick, tickle tea and toast.
I tried to use words which are almost the same tick, ticker, tickles, tickled and repeat them. Can you do mine?

Ticker's tiger tummy tickled when Tommy Ticker tickled
Ticker's tummy tickles terribly
Tommy Ticker tickled Ticker's tiger tummy too much

It is very hard to do so it need only be 2 or 3 lines. I'd begin with a name and maybe a second name which sounds similar Terry Turner or Dizzy Dozzy, Bea Beat, and then lots of verbs.

Bea's big Pea's burst in the bitter breeze etc
Reading plus.
Yesterday I noticed that not too many of you got around to completing your reading plus. It is important that we keep up with our reading and it only takes a few minutes. So please complete one today.
If you did complete one yesterday then today either quietly read one of your reading books or listen to a chapter or so on the Oxford Reading Tree's audio stories.

Can you find and move to the pulse. Click on ‘Move to the Pulse’ and try and copy the characters as they change movements to the pulse. If you change the ‘Pulse per move’ you can make it harder and easier. Can the rest of your family do it?
