We're going to spend one last day on addition today. Again, it's a reasoning task because I want you to think carefully about reasoning with addition and using what you know.
Group 1
Find page 18 and you should see the word 'Submarine' written with a number below each letter. This is what that letter is worth.
If I said add S and U together, what would you get?
You should get 25.
Below there are some questions where you need to add two letters to get that total. The two letters will make a word (not a sound but a word!). This is reasoning because this could take you a while if you choose to randomly add each pair of letters and they total up or you could think more deeply about it and should find it faster. For example - I'm going to look for a two-letter word which totals 55.
I'll start at 11. What would the units of the second number need to be make it a 5. (like in 55)
It would need to be a 4 (1 + 4 = 5) I can see 11 + 14 is too low to make 55.
Next I'll look at 14. The number would need to end in a 1 to make that a 5, and I just tried 11 so I won't bother with that one.
Next I'll look at 17. It would need to end in an 8 to make it end in a 5. There are none ending in 8 so it's not that letter either.
Now I'll try 20 and that's easy. It would need to end in a 5. Ahh, E ends in a 5 so 35 + 20 = 55.
M and E make Me. I've found it.
So from that, I am hoping that you'll realise you can save a lot of time by just adding the unit of both numbers first to find the answer rather than just trying two. Give it a go.
Group 2
You have to find the below words in your wordsearch (they don't have to be in straight or diagonal lines but can weave up and down too)
Here are the words: 'Barge' 'Canoe' 'Smack' 'Kayak' 'Skiff' 'Yacht' 'Liner' and 'Sloop' (they are all names for boats)
Then you need to work out which word goes with which total (from questions a to h)
The totals work like this:
A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, D = 4, E = 5 and so on until Z = 26.
So the word boat would be 2 + 15 + 1 + 20 which makes 38.

Can you remember what parenthesis means?
It's extra information in a sentence which has usually been added to help the reader understand something. It's always in brackets, dashes or commas and without that punctuation it would feel odd reading it.
Try reading this without pausing.
Hackfall woods a woodland near Grewelthorpe is a local beauty spot.
Can you hear that it just didn't sound right?
You can hear the parenthesis and tell it's not really part of the sentence but an extra fact. It should read: Hackfall woods (a woodland near Grewelthorpe) is a local beauty spot.

Task - you'll need your English book. Remember parenthesis are usually added to help the reader understand the noun you're talking about. E.G: Sam (someone from my school) is ten.
or - Our car (the Audi TT) is parked over there.
Find the picture below and copy the sentence out neatly and where there is a large gap, add in some parenthesis which would be useful.

Britain is famous for castles; It's full of them. After the Romans invaded and the native Celts were pushed back into Scotland and Wales castles started popping up all over the place to keep England free of these barbaric people who kept invading. Not only that but the pesky French and Spanish threatened and tried to invade several times and then of course the Vikings before them often raided our shores! No wonder Britain got a bit obsessive with building castles everywhere (over 1500)
What do you notice about castles? What features stand out?
Have a look at some of these famous, local castles.
Castles were needed to keep the town and country safe and therefore they needed to be strong and had thick walls. Often these walls had high and low parts to them to enable people to shoot arrows at the enemies advancing and then hide behind a taller section. They even poured hot liquid over the side should anyone dare to climb up. To stop that, they sometimes had a moat with a draw bridge around (most people couldn't swim back then.) Then inside the castle walls you'd have small buildings for people to live in should they be surrounded and a castle keep in the centre. Find out more about castle designs here.
