Maths

Yesterday on My Maths there was a lesson which showed you how to divide by using the short division method. We're probably already confident with that.

Today we're going to be doing some division but looking at the remainders in closer detail. When you divide and you have remainders you often need to decide whether to round them down or up depending on the word problem.

If i said there are 13 children who all need taking to the cinema. Cars have 4 spare seats. How many cars are needed to take them ALL to the cinema then you'd rightly do 13 divided by 4 and you'd get 3 remainder 1.
So do I only need 3 cars or 4?

I said ALL the children so only taking 3 cars would mean that remainder couldn't go so I'd need to round up in this case so the answer would be 4. I'd need 4 cars to enable all the children to go to the cinema.

Watch my video below to recap.

In your maths packs you should find a page on 22 which says 'Rounding Remainder's. Read the questions really carefully and before you do any maths decide what you will need to do with your remainders first. Will you be rounding them up or down.

Group one - please complete A and B

group two - please complete B and C

English

Firstly, I forgot to ask you to choose 5 spellings from the list and write in the last columns on your spelling sheet. So today you'll need to copy them twice. Silly me!
Here's the list
  -spelling list - statutory words-V295381356.pdf-

I wonder what mnenoics you all came up with? Send me yours in if you'd like to share it. I still need one to replace my old method of remembering the planet orders.

Today I would like you to research the 8 planets and learn about what makes them unique. I would like you to make 8 fact cards. You can do this how you like, using the computer, make cards or by simply dividing a piece of A4 paper into 4 and using both sides of it, you'll have 4 sections on each side.

On your cards you need a realistic picture of the planet and then some statistics and some facts. Some statistics could be; how many moons they each have, their size, their orbit time, their colour, their distance from the sun, their temperature.
Then include some unique and interesting facts about each one. It might be that ????? is infact the hottest planet because it has an atmosphere which traps the heat in.
(I bet you don't know the answer to that)

Here's what your fact sheet might look like

Reading Plus

Today I'd like you to do a reading plus or two if it was under 80%

Yesterday's comprehension answers to 'The Thrill of Wartime Work'
1) To influence people's thinking and behaviour
2) Makes it entertaining or to retain interest and help readers to identify with the central character.
3) Mushy
4) She doesn't cry.
5) Iris
6) Tears in her eyes
7) To go; to take one's self
8) Farm work or ploughing
9) There are many answers but here's one: The farmer might feel uncomfortable giving orders to women to do hard physical work. Or he might feel jealous or openminded OR he might fear that the women were not strong enough.
