Leavers assembly

A.Breckon - 10 Jul 2020

Hello everybody and welcome to our leavers assembly. It's a little bit different to how we usually do it, where we all gather in St James' church and share some final memories together before we branch off for the summer holidays.

Because of the current situation, we've tried to put together the same elements of our assembly but online. We hope that you will enjoy taking the time to watch our service and sharing our memories.

We'll begin with a short service from Mr Roberts, who has often held leavers services for us in the past, and has kindly agreed to say a few words about change and the feelings which often come with it. Can I also take this opportunity to thank you for embracing the wonders of technology and recording yourself to support our assembly.

Now we're going to listen to the song we sing each year; it's called 'One More Step Along The World I Go' and whenever I hear this song it immediately brings back memories of the leavers service. To accompany this, I've been hunting deep within the school photo archives and found some photos of the year six through the years.

Each year we award out our school trophies which take a lot of thought and consideration. We have four, one called 'The Derek Manning' cup which is for the individual who has collected the most merits over their entire schooling journey. Merits are given for achievement and hard work and certificates are given when you reach a notable landmark number and the person who has collected the most merits is....

Jack Stelling laugh well done!

The next award is for scientific thinking and goes to someone who is able to reason about the world we live in and consider ways to solve scientific investigations. Someone who doesn't take things at face value and thinks a little deeper. The person who has won this award certainly has a vast amount of scientific knowledge and is able to think creatively about their science work and that person is

AJ laugh - especially with your computer science; I think you've taught me more than I have you in this department.

The next award is for sporting achievement. Now some people can be blessed by having a natural sporting ability but this cup is for someone who not only possess ability but also manners with it; it's something we call being a good sportsperson. This award goes to....

Rhys laugh Not only are you amazing at running, football, cricket and well, everything, but you're also kind and supportive and a well-mannered leader who's respectful to everyone. Well done.

And finally, the last award is called the citizenship award which basically means being an all-round caring person who thinks of others. Someone whose kindness shines out and someone who is always ready to support other people. It's always a tough decision but we have decided that this award should be awarded to....

Jack Stelling!

Well done Jack; it's not often someone is awarded with two trophies! Perhaps you can put one in your room and one in Alice's to remind her what a fab brother she has wink

Now, we always share some of our highlights and special memories with you all. There's always so much that can be said and how do you summarise 7 years into 60-90 seconds each? Well, we've tried to do just that. We've recorded ourselves reading them aloud for you around different spots in the school. I wonder if you can recognise them?

And finally, it wouldn't be a leavers service if we didn't end with a leavers song. Year 6 have worked hard to sing the song 'Memories' by Maroon 5 but we've changed the lyrics to suit our scenario. I hope you enjoy it as this is where our leavers service ends.
All that is left to say is, it's been a pleasure and privliege, as always, to have taught you all for year six. Grewelthorpe School are very proud of you and know you're going to be amazing in your new schools. We'll miss you very much.
To everybody else, we wish you a lovely summer holiday and look forward to seeing you in September again.

Take care and happy summer.

Mr Breckon laugh
