About Class 3
Class information:
Welcome to Class 3 - Year 5 and 6 - from Mr Breckon!
Our classroom is a vibrant and exciting place where learning, creativity, and confidence grow every day. As the oldest students in the school, we take pride in being positive role models and leaders within our school community.
We are encouraged to think independently, ask thoughtful questions, and take on responsibilities—both in the classroom and around the school. Whether it's preparing for secondary school, leading assemblies, helping younger students, or representing our school in sports and competitions, we rise to every challenge with enthusiasm and a strong sense of teamwork.
Homework
Reading
There is an expectation at Grewelthorpe that the children read regularly at home and in school. The children will bring home their reading books and record books every day. They must bring the books back to school the following day. To try to encourage reading at home, we are asking you to sign your child’s reading record. As their confidence grows, they may read to themselves and not to you, but please would you still sign their reading record book.
Spellings
The children will be given a list of spellings to learn each week for their spelling test on Friday.
Maths
In Class Three, there will be a focus on ensuring the children know their times tables and in the summer of Year Four the children will sit a Multiplication Assessment. To support them with this learning, the Mmaths homework in Class Three will often be times tables based, although we will try and vary it too. Homework will be sent out on Thursday and then collected back on on the following Wednesday. There will sometimes be computer based homework and we appreciate that internet connections can drop, especially in rural areas. If anyone is struggling to get online to access the homework just let me know and we can arrange an alternative.
In class we have regular sessions on an app called Rockstar Maths. The children can go on this at home as many times as they want, and they are really enjoying using it. There is a link below to the site to help.
In Year 5 and 6, we explore big ideas across all subjects:
English
We focus on developing confident readers and skilled writers. Children explore a wide range of texts,
including novels, poetry, and non-fiction, and use them as inspiration to write creatively and with purpose. Grammar, spelling, and vocabulary are taught in context to help pupils become fluent, expressive communicators.
Maths
Our maths curriculum deepens understanding of key concepts such as fractions, decimals, percentages, and problem-solving. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, tackle complex challenges, and apply their skills in real-life contexts.
Science
We investigate exciting topics such as forces, Earth and space, properties of materials, and living things. Pupils work scientifically by asking questions, planning investigations, and drawing conclusions from their findings.
History & Geography
Children explore significant historical events, ancient civilizations, and global geography, developing research and critical thinking skills.
Art & Design Technology
Creativity is nurtured through projects that encourage self-expression and hands-on learning.
Computing
Children develop digital skills through coding, online safety lessons, and using technology to
support their learning across the curriculum.
RE & PSHE
We promote respect, empathy, and an understanding of different beliefs and values. Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education helps pupils navigate friendships, emotions, and challenges confidently.
PE
Physical Education promotes fitness, teamwork, and perseverance through a wide range of sports and
activities.
