They have sat multiple exams and worked in such a studious manner, with dedication and commitment - they have absolutely done our school proud. jubilant scenes as the SATs were declared over for 2026 - well done year 6 - you're awesome In our history lessons, we've been studying how farming was crucial to the survival of the Maya. They lived in a hot, tropical climate with wet and dry seasons. In order to yield the best harves

Constructing a Maya civilisation
We're now quite knowledgeable about the Maya - we've learnt about their Gods and how they lived their whole lives to please them. We've ben studying their cities in greater detail, looking at what remains and finding out what they were. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zq6svcw/articles/z2yttrd#z6944xs Our task is now to recreate a civilisation, historically realistic but all out of Lego. The children need to research the types of buildings, look at their purpose and loc

Getting to know the Maya
We've been studying the volume this week in maths. The children have learnt the process of finding the volume and to try and make maths as engaging as possible, we like to have a bit of fun with our calculations. We know the process to calculate it, but will it work? We found the volume of containers and then measured the exact amount of water out and poured it into a container... however, we needed a brave volunteer to sit underneath said container while we poured the water

Around the world tour
We've been reading Kensuke's Kingdom, which is based on a family who decide to pack up and go on an around-the-world tour (if only!) however, they're doing it in a tiny boat and sailing across the Atlantic with only basic experience. The story's centred around Michael, an 11-year-old boy who blogs about his trip. We've been writing as Michael inventing our own blogs using Purple Mash. The children have really enjoyed writing their own, reading others and leaving supportive co

Summer, here we come
This week, we've been brushing up on our angles understanding. Using the protractor to measure precisely and then had lots of fun to estimate freehand and see how close we were. We've also used our knowledge to solve angle puzzles where protractors aren't needed. We've also begun are much-anticipated history unit on ancient Maya. As with all history units, we studied where this period fits in with British chronology and compared the two. We then, located the Maya regions with

Sunny forest schools
At forest school for the last few weeks we have discussed fire etiquette in order to light a fire safely. We have practised using a flint and steel to create a spark and reminded ourselves of the fire triangle. We have toasted smores and also cooked bread on the fire on a peeled green stick. We have also learnt a lot about how to keep ourselves safe when using tools. Children have practised whittling using peelers and hand knives, peeling bark, practising a stop cut and a thu

First aid
This week, we've been doing some very important skills around how to deliver first aid and what to do in an emergency. Here we are carrying out a practical and putting our first-aid knowledge to the test. We were also very fortunate to have Bethel church come back to deliver a different workshop on the life of Jesus. They went through Jesus' life in order and brought it to life by having people play roles from the stories. We got to do a bit of drama by acting out the scenes

Shake it off
This week class 3 had the opportunity to go to a dance showcase. They've been eagerly mastering a dance routine all halfterm and demonstrated their dance to a crowded hall, full of primary-school children. They carried it out with such enthusiasm, there were cartwheels a plenty and shaking hips. Here they are in full swing. Some were noted for their contribution and received an award for their efforts. In other areas of the curriculum, we've been studying the solar system and

Art Week - David Hockney
We always look forward to art week and this time it was painting's turn to be our choice of medium. As with all art projects, Mrs Lyall (our art specialist) is on speed dial and is always keen to offer a helping hand. She came into to model how perspective can be created in a landscape by looking at the vanishing point Mrs Lyall also demonstated pointillism, which we then had a go at. We were now ready to consider drawing some outlines of our landscape, with perspective in mi

We Will Rock You 🤘
What a band we'd make with this lot - very cool looking and we're not just pretty faces either, we also won the time-tables rockstar competition with ease 🤘 We've been looking at soluble and insoluble materials this week and have carried out an investigation to discover the outcome. The class were quite surprised by the results, like how the oil would float on the surface and not mix in. We first planned the investigation and ensured we were doing it all in a scientific and

Balanced arguements
We've started looking at balanced arguments in English and weighing up where we stand on a range of subjects. Should children get homework? Should children own mobile phones? We quickly realised we needed to go over what being unbiased meant and had to consider both sides of the debate... Needless to say, their minds were made up but here we are deciding where we stand on the use of mobile phones We also highligted the features of a balanced argument And then held a full deba

Ripon questionnaire
We've finished our newspapers and what an excellent job they've done with them. They've worked extremely hard to communicate the news story in a formal manner, with fact but interest as a focus. We're very proud of their work and presentation. We've also been continuing our investigation as to whether Ripon ought to reconsider its closure of the railway station, back in 1969. First, we invited a man from the Civic Society to explain some of the transport history of Ripon, inc

Local geography
We've continued with our newspaper reports, and have been busy collecting research and quotes to ensure we've got all the facts and are accurate with our information. Here's a behind-the-scenes shot of our reporters at the press office. We've also been developing our understanding of our local area and have been studying Ripon and older maps of the area to locate where the former rail station stood and the where the line went. Here we are adding the former railline to a moder

Welcome back
Happy new year to you all - we had a traditional start back and made our first song in assembly Auld Land Syne, and joined hands; it was lots of fun. We also shared our hopes and aspirations for the year ahead. We've started our new class book, Holes, which we're using as an inspiration for our writing. We've been looking at the features of newspaper reports, and imagining the situation of the lead character in the story, Stanley, and have been collecting evidence from the tr

Christmas is coming
We've celebrated the Christmas season with lots of fun activities; we had our Christmas lunch which was really yummy while enjoying Christmas songs We then ran our Christmas-fayre stalls which the children were extremely excited about. They designed their own games with profit in mind. They had to think of the accessibility of the game, it's appeal and the prizes on offer. Once they planned this, they tested it out and costed the game buying prizes as well as decorating their

It's behind you!
This week it's all becoming to feel a bit like Christmas around Grewelthorpe School. First the school council put up the Christmas tree and made our hall look more festive. Then on Friday, we got to visit the Pantomime; it's been quite a while since we've had a whole school outing to the pantomime. Here we are getting into the spirit of things before our trip. Needless to say, they didn't need to say "I can't hear you" to this lively bunch - everybody definitely picked up tha

Printing fantastic
This week it's been art week - we always look forward to our art-focused weeks and the medium was through printing. The children experimented with different techniques to print; we soon discovered that printing is very difficult and isn't going to produce the crisp and polished outcomes. With that in mind, we aimed to create Christmas-card designs, using simple shapes and backgrounds but through a layered build up approach. After trying out printing styles and weighing up the

The Legend of the Malamander
Over the past few weeks, we've been studying the book 'Malamander' which is a legendary creature who lurks within the sea mist in the town of Eerie-On-Sea. We've been working towards writing our own legends and for this we have been writing some poems which sound like folk law, with mysterious hearsays and tales of sightings. We also created some Malamander eyes to accompany them. Here we are having great fun using clay to create an eye shape with stand-out features Our fini

Children in Need
This week we had some exciting news - Sara Cox was going to be running through our village as part of her Northern Challenge, where she was aiming to run 135 miles for Children in Need. With that in mind, we wanted to make her feel are inspired as possible, give her that extra life she no doubt needed to carry on. We began by designing posters with motivational slogans on and theming them around Children In Need Then came the moment we'd all been waiting for, first the drones
