British Values

This refers to a set of five core principals that all schools are required by law to actively promote as part of children's spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. These values aim to prepare students for life in modern Britain and foster an inclusive, respectful school environment.

The five foundational British values are:

  • Democracy: Teaching children how to influence decision-making processes. In primary schools, this is often demonstrated through voting for "School Councils," holding debates, and understanding how rules are made.

  • The Rule of Law: Helping pupils understand that laws and rules protect everyone and maintain order. Children learn the difference between right and wrong and the consequences of their actions.

  • Individual Liberty: Encouraging students to make their own choices safely and respectfully, such as selecting their learning challenges or participating in extra-curricular clubs.

  • Mutual Respect: Instilling respect for others. Children learn how their behavior affects the rights of their peers and adults, cultivating a caring and considerate atmosphere.

  • Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs: Educating pupils about various cultures, religions, and traditions to ensure they treat everyone with respect regardless of background.

These concepts are typically woven into day-to-day school life, including Collective Worship, Religious Education (RE), and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) lessons.
