Reading is one of the most important things we do in school, and we are really lucky to have such an amazing library to use. We make sure we find time to read individually every day, as well as reading a class book out loud too. The children love using the books to discover new things and help us with our topic work (and some people have worked out that at book can be handy for hiding behind when the teacher is taking pictures for the website too! ).

This week we have been carrying out some experiments in science to see what happens when we heat and cool solids, and how we can change the state a material is in. We timed how long it would take for jelly cubes to melt in some beakers, which all had different temperatures of water in. Afterwards, we looked at what would happen if we then cooled a liquid down at different temperatures too, and how long they would take to solidify. We all had lots of fun measuring temperatures

This week the children have been making some mini-flag poles to tie in with the World Cup. They had to design a way of getting the flags to go up and down the pole, and then they decorated their creations too. Afterwards everyone drew the flag of the country that they thought would win the World Cup, and nearly the whole class went for England! Let's hope they're right!

As the children have been taking part in a school play all about Robin Hood we thought it would be a good idea to look at the story of Robin in our Guided Reading sessions. The children loved reading all of the different tales that Robin was involved in and we acted a few of the scenes out too. After a few battles in class with the evil Sheriff we wrote down our answers in our books and even drew what we thought Robin's hideaway would look like based on the text. The children

Yesterday we all had a great time to visit Leeds Art Gallery; it was a welcome relief to be inside a cool building to spend the day. We spent sometime admiring the different styles of art, from Victorian oil paintings, to a mixture of mediums to paint portraits, to modern sculpture and, well, lots of other 'art' pieces known as contemporary, which required lots of open-mindedness to interpret which was lots of fun. This week we have been learning about a really important area with the children and we have been looking at money. The children have been looking at the different values of the coins, and then playing games to create different amounts with a partner. They loved the challenge of trying to see how many coins they needed and working out how to make the same totals in different ways. By the end of the lesson they were all experts with money and they were able to solve the problem

Every Tuesday we have French with Mr Breckon and the children get to work on their language skills. This week Class 2 have been learning about stationery and how to explain what's in their pencil cases. They have worked really hard to learn all the French words for the classroom stationery and took part in some speaking and listening tasks where they explained their pencil case contents for a partner to guess. To tie in with our celebrations around the school being 150 years old, we went on a whole school trip to the work house in Ripon so we could see what life was like in in the 1870s. Once the children had recovered from the shock of being told that there was no internet back then we toured the museum and took part in lots of different activities. We have been using maps of the local area to work out where the abbey is, and how we could get there from our school (the children are definitely better at not getting lost than I am!). Thursday is everyone's favourite day of the week as the children have their music lesson with Mrs Longstaff. Over the term the children will be creating their own pieces of music using a range of different instruments and focusing on different styles too. The children really enjoy getting all of the instruments out and have a great time playing together and being creative. We can't wait to see what they come up with!

It was great to see everybody again this week and to be able to welcome the children back to school. This week has been a really busy week as we have saved one of our best topics until last - levers and linkages in D and T. The children had to create an Easter card that had different moving parts to it, and they had to design all of the mechanisms and movements by themselves.
