The Royal Coronation

27 May 2022

What a week it's been! Class 4 have been rehearsing a re-enactment of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II from back in 1953 to celebrate her 70 years as monarch. As part of this, the children have been learning songs, making props and creating pieces of art.

To begin the week we were learning about just how different life was like back in the 50s back when Mr and Mrs Collins were born (shhh) and they came in to share some information and bring in objects which were common place then. We couldn't believe that TVs were so small and that even rations were still going on!

We also spent a lot of time focusing on some art projects where paint-colour choice plays a real importance to bringing out the predominant features. We talked about Andy Warhol's famous Marilyn Monroe's piece and how her features were highlighted due to his use of colour. We created our own of the Queen.
We also had someone come in with plates which we could decorate to commemorate the jubilee which was lots of fun.

We finished with creating a large-scale portrait of the Queen, which had been split into sections. We all decorated a piece using zentangle designs and simple colours and when we put it back together, it really did look quite striking. This masterpiece can now be found in the village church if you'd like to view it smiley

And finally, we got to re-enact the coronation as it would have been and I have to say just how proud I was of them all. To say we only had 5 rehearsals and yet they managed to pull off a flawless performance left us all feeling quite overwhelmed with pride. Here are some highlights of the ceremony.
