Microorganisms, candles and fractions

What a busy week we've had!
We've been working on describing the opening scene of ET to develop our recount writing. We're currently working on writing newspaper reports, imagining the moments before the spacecraft landed and the carnage caused to the poor residents who witnessed it.
We've also been working on using resources to embed the concept of equivalent fractions. We know that as long as you multiply/divide both parts of the fraction, you'll get an equivalent but using resources has really helped us confirm this and see why.
In science, we've been doing a lot of classifying of living things. This week has led us to focus on microorganisms. We know they're there, but without a microscope we can't see them. To see what helps microorganisms grow, we've been using bread to see which piece will grow more mould. Our classroom does look a little odd with pieces of bread placed all over but it's all in the name of science. Some groups thought the temperature would have the most effect, others thought it could be to do with moisture within the bread and some even tried handling/licking the bread to see if that had a bigger impact.
Time will tell.
And finally, with the grand, high-end store 'Elfridges' coming to town, our little elves have been busy in their Christmas workshop making eco-friendly products with a minimal carbon footprint left from producing them. Using recycled products to make 'luxury' candles.
