Reducing our carbon footprint and more

04 Nov 2021

We've spent a lot of time this week focusing on our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint as a school. We invited the county-council in to share their ideas on ways we could reduce our footprint.

They told us about the importance of recycling and reusing, as it can be very difficult to change our lifestyles but we can change what we do with the products we do use. Rather than throw away rubbish into the general waste, we played a game where we discovered just how many alternatives there are for most things.

One way we can reduce our footprint is to compost cardboard rubbish and food waste. We made mini wormeries which can be added to our own compost bins. We want the school to have a compost bin from today's learning.

We also looked at alternative ways of producing electricity, such as solar panels. We powered a smoothie maker by riding a bike.

Yesterday we visited a local farm to see how they work to reduce their carbon footprint but still produce foods.
We got to have a little ride on a trailer and meet his farm dog, Jess. I don't think she's ever had so much attention and loved every minute!

We explored the different fields and had a closer look at the Earth underneath them. It turns out you can tell a lot about what was growing in the fields by looking at the soil. The carbon which is stored and used depends on what was growing there. Trees and hedgerows use a lot of carbon within the ground. And by not using unnatural pesticides and fertilizers means food can be produced organically which is better for wildlife, and of course reduces a farm's carbon footprint.

Jess demonstrated how to herd sheep.

Finally, we ended the week by meeting some exotic and slightly creepy animals, which will launch our science topic, living things.
