Banksy, Islam and a nativity all in the same week!

10 Dec 2021

We've spent the last few lessons looking at the elusive artist (or some may say unlawful vandal) Banksy. We've learnt a lot about the history of his works, researched some examples and had a go at imitating some.

We know that his works are always to encourage us to think about the bigger issues and we've spent a lot of time deducing possible meanings from his pieces and had a debate on whether we think he is an inspirational artist or an unlawful vandal. It was hard to firm up an opinion without contradicting ourselves in other ways. Nevertheless, we've learnt a lot about what art means to us.

Below are some examples of our research on Banksy

We tried to imitate Banksy's famous piece 'Girl with Balloon' as seen below

Banksy made a copy of this, which was famously sent partially through a shredder only moments after being bought for £18.5 million pounds (see below)

We worked hard to create our own versions of this.

We spent Thursday listening to Imran, a muslim, who came in to talk to us all about his faith. He discussed the special, life-changing pilgrimage all muslims should make once in their life called Hajj. It was so interesting to hear all about his faith and identify many similarities to the Christian faith too.

And what better way to end the week than by coming in wearing Christmas jumpers. We boasted all kinds of designs and it brightened up the classroom. We had to take several shots due to one person or another not looking so excuse the last picture, where we all went a little crazy!
