Black History Month

21 Oct 2022

This week the children took part in a special set of enrichment activities looking at Black History Month. We studied famous black people and looked at how they had contributed to history and how they had influenced our world. We also looked at the story of the Windrush and talked about the experiences of the people who came over from the Caribbean.

Our class focus for the week was the history of the Notting Hill festival and how and why it was started. The children really enjoyed finding out about the carnival and looking at the amazing oufits and dancing going on. I think some wanted to start their own Grewelthorpe version!

After that the children looked at different materials they could use and then designed their own costumes in groups.

The children then had their first go at sewing! It was quite tricky at first but the children really enjoyed working on different types of stitches and experimenting with different ways of joining the fabrics together.  Mr Boyle also helped us to decorate the costumes by adding different materials.

After lots of hard work each group finished their costume and they all looked amazing! They were really bright and eye-catching.

I hope you all have a great half term and well done for working so hard since we came back after the summer!
